Jonesboro, AR — (JonesboroRightNow.com) — July 9, 2025 — Police arrested a Jonesboro man after they said he beat a man over a pair of boots, causing him to be taken to the hospital and intubated.

According to an affidavit, on July 7, Jonesboro police officers were dispatched to the 200 block of North Allis Street regarding a shooting.

When they arrived, they found a victim with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his nose. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Originally, a news release from JPD said the victim suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital, but later retracted this, saying the victim received “severe lacerations during an altercation.” The affidavit noted that witnesses assumed the victim had been shot based on his injuries.

Video footage was later found showing two men walking in the area.

The affidavit said another officer who arrived shortly after noticed a pool of fresh blood on the road with a tooth. Witnesses said the two men seen in the video stood over the victim while he was lying on the ground. The victim told them that a “Lopez” hurt him.

Another video showed the men walking toward the incident location, then in the opposite direction. Someone who lived on the street identified one of the men as 34-year-old Augustine Lee Lopez.

A person who knew the other male suspect and witnessed the incident met with one of the responding officers at the Jonesboro Police Department. They said Lopez asked him to walk up the street with the other male suspect, at which time Lopez spoke with another person over the phone.

The affidavit said that once in front of the victim’s home, Lopez confronted him about stealing boots from him and attacked the victim by “dumping” him on his head and repeatedly kicking him in the head. Both the victim and Lopez then walked back to their apartment complex.

Police noted the victim had multiple lacerations and swelling to his face and the back of his head, and he had lost a tooth due to the incident. They added that the victim had trouble breathing at the hospital due to the swelling and had to be intubated.

Lopez was arrested and taken to the Jonesboro Police Department, where, during a Mirandized interview, he admitted that his feelings were hurt due to the victim stealing his boots and hurting the victim. He also admitted to taking the victim’s phone and breaking it, the affidavit said.

On July 9, Judge David Boling found probable cause to charge Lopez with second-degree battery with the purpose of causing injury.

Lopez is being held in the Craighead County Detention Center on a $25,000 cash/surety bond, awaiting his next court appearance scheduled for Aug. 21.
