Jonesboro, AR – Jonesboro Right Now – A Jonesboro man is being held on a $100,000 cash/surety bond after police said they found him inside a stranger’s apartment with dozens of pieces of stolen mail and a post office key.

On Oct. 29, Jonesboro police officers were dispatched to an apartment complex on North Caraway Road for a burglary in progress.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the victim told officers that a man, later identified as 23-year-old Kosuke Moriya, had entered their apartment and was found in their living room.

When officers arrived, they searched Moriya and found he had a stamped United States Postal Service property mailbox key. He also reportedly had over 40 pieces of mail belonging to 38 different victims who reside in the same apartment complex.

Officers noted the complex’s mailbox arrangement and determined the items were taken directly from the tenants’ mailboxes, the affidavit said.

Investigators learned that Moriya did not live at the apartment complex and had made entry into another nearby apartment. During the arrest, officers reported finding a THC vape pen on Moriya.

Moriya appeared the next day in front of District Judge Tommy Fowler, who found probable cause to charge Moriya with multiple charges:

  • Aggravated residential burglary (Class A felony)
  • Theft or unauthorized reproduction of a mail receptacle key or lock (Class D felony)
  • Breaking or entering (Class D felony)
  • Mail theft (Class D felony)
  • Possession of a Schedule VI substance less than four ounces (Class A misdemeanor)

In addition to the $100,000 bond, Fowler ordered Moriya to turn over his passport as a condition of release. He added that due to the high volume of stolen mail, Moriya could face additional charges.

Moriya is scheduled to be back in court on Dec. 16.
