Jonesboro, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – April 17, 2024 – The Jonesboro City Council voted Tuesday night to approve a liquor license for Brasas Mexican Grill, 1820 S. Main St.

The vote was 9-3, with council members David McClain, Dr. Anthony Coleman and Janice Porter voting against the permit.

The restaurant now must apply for a permit from the Arkansas Alcohol Beverage Control Board in Little Rock.

Resident James Hines spoke out against the permit, citing its location across South Main Street from Jonesboro High School,

Resident Jason Willett spoke in favor of the permit, saying restaurant staff is trained to ID patrons before serving them alcohol. He also said QVW Holdings Inc., the non-profit parent company for Brasas, has funded many youth organizations and others in the community.

In other business, the council heard a second reading of a resolution to approve an interlocal agreement between the city and Craighead County on shared expenses for the Craighead County Jonesboro Public Library.

For the second consecutive meeting, Craighead County Justice of the Peace Garrett Barnes told the council, during public comments, that he believes the city should have more appointments to the library’s board of directors since the city contributes much more money to the library than the county does,

Currently, the mayor has three appointments to the board while the county judge has four.

Barnes recommended the council add an amendment to the resolution changing the nomination process. The Craighead County Quorum Court has already approved the agreement.

Mayor Harold Copenhaver said he would speak to County Judge Marvin Day about a change.
