Jonesboro, AR — (JonesboroRightNow.com) — May 9, 2025 — A downtown Jonesboro road closed due to the former Citizens Bank demolition project is expected to reopen Friday.

The east-west corner of Washington Avenue will be open to traffic later on Friday. City of Jonesboro communications director Donna Malone told JRN the area could reopen anywhere from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. She said that estimate comes from the Jonesboro Street Department.

“There is not a specific time for opening in that we don’t know how long it’s going to take for paint to dry, for example, how long it’s going to take to move some barriers and how long it’s going to take to just perform little tasks,” Malone said. “We’re just gonna open as soon as possible.”

Malone added that Main Street itself will remain closed for a few more days and would likely reopen anywhere from Monday to Wednesday. On Main Street, decorative lighting must still be installed and things such as construction fencing and scaffolding must be cleared.

“Just kind of doing a safety check of everything that is involved in that first block of Main Street past Washington,” she said. “[Main Street opening] could be as soon as Monday afternoon, could be as late as Wednesday, but we are talking within the first part of the week.”

Parts of Main Street have been shut down since Sept. 25, 2024, when a bulge was noticed in the side of the former Citizens Bank building. The City Council approved the project in January and demolition officially began in March.
