Jonesboro, AR — (JonesboroRightNow.com) — June 19, 2025 — The Juneteenth holiday is today, and certain offices and services in Jonesboro may be closed.
Juneteenth became a federal holiday on June 17, 2021, when then-President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. The holiday celebrates June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, TX, informing the remaining enslaved African Americans of their freedom, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued.
According to a Facebook post by the City of Jonesboro, the city’s offices will be open today. Jonesboro Economical Transit (JET) buses will run on their regular schedules, as will trash and recycling pickups. It added that police, fire and E-911 services are fully operational.
The Craighead County Courthouse is also open today.
According to the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration, the Jonesboro DMV will be open today. However, other northeast Arkansas offices, such as Wynne, Walnut Ridge, Pocahontas and Cave City, are closed. These offices will resume regular hours on Friday, June 20.
The U.S. Postal Service is closed and will not deliver mail today, except holiday premium Priority Mail Express. Regular hours will resume on Friday. However, private shipping companies, such as FedEx and UPS, are open and will run pickup and delivery services.
Juneteenth is also recognized as a Federal Reserve Bank holiday, so while banks are not required to close, some may do so. Transactions made today may be processed the next business day. However, online banking services and ATMs will not be affected.
Check with your bank to see if it’s open today.
