Jonesboro, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – Jan. 3, 2025 – City Councilperson Chris Moore provided some tips for preparing your home’s plumbing for winter weather on Friday through the City of Jonesboro Facebook page.

Temperatures are expected to drop starting Sunday night, with both the high and low temperatures for next week forecasted to be below freezing, according to the National Weather Service.

To protect plumbing, Moore recommended disconnecting all outdoor hoses and covering any outside hydrants with foam covers. He also recommended opening any cabinet doors under a sink to allow warm air to circulate.

In addition, he said people should turn up their thermostats a few degrees. The best temperature range is 68°F to 72°F. He recommended letting faucets drip with a small stream of water, about the size of a pencil lead, as this prevents pipes from freezing.

He also said any foundation vents should be closed and crawl spaces should be sealed, and homeowners should locate their water meters now in case they need to access it later.

Finally, he emphasized that homeowners should take these precautions as soon as possible, as plumbing services may be delayed.

“By following these winter weather tips, you can protect your home, prevent costly damage, and enjoy peace of mind during the coldest days,” Moore said in the Facebook post. “Stay safe and warm, Jonesboro!”

The city will also have warming stations around the community. JETS will provide free rides to a warming center as well. Learn more here.
