Jonesboro, AR – Contributed – The Windgate 3D Biennial Symposium returns for a second year to Arkansas State University.

The week-long symposium hosted by the Art + Design Department will take place March 9-13, at the Windgate Center for Three-Dimensional Arts.

Throughout the week, artists in residence will be demoing, lecturing, pouring iron and firing wood kiln(s). All programming is free and open to the A-State community and the public.

“We are really excited for this iteration of the symposium. Focusing on craft and process, we are showcasing our iron casting and woodfiring aspects of our program with our esteemed group of invited artists,” said Zach Tate, assistant professor of studio art, ceramics.

This year’s symposium will feature visiting artists Jim Brenner, Eva Zethraeus, Allison Baker, James Vanderpool, Dr. Scott Meyer, Ken Baskin and Tok (Todd) Yu Xiang.

“Having so many makers in residence is a great opportunity for our students and community to get a diverse look at these processes,” said Tate.

A schedule of events is below, separated by day.

Monday, March 9:

  • From 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., Meyer and Baskin will be doing live demonstrations. It will also include an artist talk and a slideshow for Baskin during this time. This will take place in Windgate, studio 121.

Tuesday, March 10:

  • From 12 to 5 p.m., Meyer and Baskin will be making ceramics with live demonstrations, followed by a slideshow for Meyer at noon. This will take place in Windgate, studio 121.
  • Allison Baker will have an artist talk at 9 a.m. in Windgate, room 124.
  • James Brenner will also host an artist talk and offer live demonstrations at 11 a.m. in Windgate, room 124.
  • James Vanderpool, foundry operations manager at the Metal Museum in Memphis, will offer an artist talk and a live demonstration at 2 p.m. in Windgate, room 124.

Wednesday, March 11:

  • From 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., demonstrations will continue in Windgate, studio 121.
  • An artist slideshow for Zethraeus will begin at noon in Windgate, studio 121.

Thursday, March 12:

  • Wood firings will continue at the Curt Huckaby Rugby Field, 501 Red Wolf Trail, Jonesboro, with an iron pour at noon.
  • Artists will continue demonstrations of ceramic work throughout the day in Windgate, studio 121.

Friday, March 13:

  • The week-long events conclude with symposium cleanup and goodbyes.

Parking will be available for attendees at Windgate, across the street from the building in the large parking lot, and at the rugby field.
