Fairbanks, AK – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – Jan. 23, 2025 – University of Alaska Fairbanks student Ty Nichols of Jonesboro has been awarded a NextGen scholarship from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

In 2024, the NextGen Program awarded 55 scholarships worth a total of $525,000 to undergraduate and graduate students at UAF.

More than 83% of the NextGen funds were allocated to underrepresented or first-generation college students, underscoring the USDA’s dedication to promoting diversity and equity in agricultural education.

Through these scholarships, the NextGen Program supports and equips scholars with knowledge and opportunities. This includes participation in events like the annual Alaska Farm Bureau conference in November, where students could explore careers in agriculture.

To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must have a minimum 2.0 GPA and attended four of the five USDA Scholar Activities, which are listed below.

  • USDA Information Session, which familiarizes students with different USDA jobs.
  • Model USDA, which is similar to programs like Model UN and Model Congress and trains students in leadership skills and policy development.
  • USAjobs.gov Workshop, which teaches students how to apply for federal employment.
  • Food and Climate Symposium, which is a virtual conference educating attendees on reusable resources and how to properly use them.
  • Career Counseling, which scholarship applicants have exclusive access to ensure they are prepared to enter the workforce.
