Jonesboro, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – June 25, 2024 – A large construction project is underway at the University Heights Elementary School on Aggie Road.

Dr. Karen Curtner, Superintendent, told JRN that the school is expanding their footprint by adding several classrooms and a new gym. With the current building being “landlocked” by houses, this was their only option for expansion.

“We hated to cut down the trees,” she said, “they were beautiful. But this was the only way.”

Curtner said that the school needs the extra room. The current building does have a Tornado Shelter that doubles as an area for student activities during the day, but the new gym will be available day and night for assemblies, ballgames, and musical or drama productions.

The school has pledged to replant every tree that it cut down one-for-one.

Curtner said construction could take up to two years.
