Jonesboro, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – Nov. 25, 2024 – Community members are invited to help shape the future of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Trail during a Community Discussion hosted by the Jonesboro Parks and Recreation Department today.

The discussion will be held today from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the E. Boone Watson Community Center, located at 1005 Logan Ave.

Jonesboro Parks and Recreation Director Danny Kapales said they want community input about the MLK Freedom Trail project, which will feature greenspaces and monuments inspired by King’s powerful words and legacy.

“We know the many great things that Martin Luther King Jr. did for or country and our community,” Kapales said. “We also know of the many great civil rights leaders from right here that should be acknowledged as well.”

He said they will be seeking input and ideas on the following:

  • Sculptures featuring King’s quotes
  • Honoring local civil rights events
  • Recognizing local civil rights leaders

He added that residents are encouraged to complete the two surveys online to help design the sculptures reflecting Martin Luther King Jr.’s message. These sculptures will feature quotes and words related to King’s work, and civil rights as whole. The surveys are below:

“We want as much public input as we can get, so that we can create something meaningful for our community and residents can see want they want to see along the trail.”
