Jonesboro, AR — (JonesboroRightNow.com) — July 15, 2025 — The Undercurrent Collective will be hosting its very first production, “Cabaret,” this weekend at The Lounge at Huntington Square.
Undercurrent Collective cofounder and Director Alex Dunn said this will be the organization’s first fully staged production, and it’s been a community effort.
“’Cabaret’ is an iconic, electrifying musical that will transport you to the heart of 1930s Berlin, where passion, politics, and scandal come to life on stage. We chose it because it aligns perfectly with our mission: to spark dialogue, challenge audiences, and highlight the power of performance to reflect and question the world around us,” Dunn said.
Dunn said ‘Cabaret’ was selected after a birthday dinner with her husband. At the time, she and Undercurrent Collective cofounder and assistant director Mallory Gushard got the idea to create a safe space and community for creative adults after remembering their time together in community theater.
According to Dunn, the nonprofit art collective was formed earlier this year with the belief that art should do more than entertain; it should provoke thought, encourage dialogue, and advocate for change.
“Our goal is to create a third space for adults in Northeast Arkansas, focusing on underrepresented voices and stories in collaboration with the community we are all a part of,” she said. “Our first venture is musical; however, we plan to delve into all forms of art, visual, literary, and performance, to give adults spaces to express themselves for free or at little cost.”
All ticket revenue funds future programming, helping cover production costs, as well as future projects, workshops, and community engagement events, Dunn said.
Performances of Cabaret are scheduled for July 18-20 at The Lounge at Huntington Square. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, with the show starting at 7 p.m. Doors open on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the show starting at 3 p.m. Tickets are $20 each and are available here.
“We’re especially proud of the collaborative nature of this production. It’s truly built by and for the community, and we hope it inspires conversations long after the final curtain,” Dunn said. “Our cast is extremely talented, and the dedication of our production team has made this all possible. We’re also deeply grateful to our community partners, like The Lounge and Story Rentals, without whom this production simply wouldn’t have been possible.”
