Jonesboro, AR – Contributed – A $100,000 gift from Nancy Benson Ward will support future veterinary students at Arkansas State University through the newly established Dr. Bill W. Benson Memorial Scholarship.
The endowed scholarship honors Ward’s late brother, Dr. Bill W. Benson, a dedicated veterinarian who devoted his life to veterinary medicine while serving the suburban Baltimore area for 40 years.
Benson, the son of Daniel and Hilda Benson, was born and raised in Hampton, AR. His lifelong commitment to caring for animals and helping others inspired Ward to create a lasting tribute to his work and values.
“Bill devoted his life to caring for animals and improving the lives of those around him,” Ward said. “This scholarship is a way to continue his legacy by supporting future veterinarians who share his passion for service.”
The scholarship will assist full-time students accepted into A-State’s College of Veterinary Medicine, which is anticipated to open in fall 2026.
“We are deeply appreciative of Nancy’s commitment to honoring her brother through this scholarship,” said Dr. Heidi Banse, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine. “Her gift will have a meaningful impact on our students and their path towards becoming veterinarians.”
Now a resident of Benton, Ward was a career educator in the Bryant School System.
The first scholarship will be awarded during the 2026-27 academic year. The CVM hopes to welcome 120 students to its inaugural class in a 56,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility that broke ground March 12.
