Jonesboro, AR – Jonesboro Right Now – A West Memphis man faces multiple charges after police said he shot at a Jonesboro home and forced his way inside.

Judge Barbara Halsey found probable cause Aug. 31 to charge 47-year-old Floydie Billups with the following offenses:

  • Terroristic act – occupiable structure (Class B felony)
  • Possession of a firearm by certain persons/prior violent felony with a deadly weapon (Class B felony)
  • Aggravated assault (Class D felony)
  • First-degree criminal mischief/property of another with a value of $1,000 or less (Class A misdemeanor)
  • Discharging firearms within city limits (Unclassified)

According to the probable cause affidavit, on Aug. 29, Jonesboro police officers were dispatched to a home for someone trying to break in and shooting at it.

Upon arrival, officers found Billups in the garage and several other people outside of the home. Billups was found to have a large cut on his leg, so he was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The affidavit said witnesses residing at the home told investigators that Billups—who had been staying there for a few nights but was not a permanent resident—was intoxicated and became upset while making statements about money.

The dispute escalated when Billups began kicking at a side glass patio door in an attempt to enter the home, according to the probable cause affidavit. Residents reported seeing Billups outside with a handgun, which he then raised and pointed at the home. The witnesses fled the home and reported hearing multiple gunshots shortly after.

Following the shooting, officers located a shattered patio door and a blood trail.

Police said the trail led from the broken glass, into the home, down a stairwell to the basement, and across the floor to the interior door connecting to the garage where Billups was found. They noted the physical evidence was consistent with the patio door being shot multiple times and Billups sustaining his leg injury while making entry through the broken glass.

A search of the garage yielded a handgun matching the description provided by witnesses, which officers found in a trash can. The residents confirmed to detectives that the recovered firearm did not belong to them.

During Monday’s hearing, Halsey noted that Billups has three prior firearm possession charges and a criminal history that spans three states, resulting in a $250,000 cash/surety bond. He was also ordered to have no contact with the victims and wear a GPS ankle monitor upon release.

Billups’ next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 30.
