Jonesboro, AR – Jonesboro Right Now – Main Street in downtown Jonesboro is reopening to vehicular traffic after initial shoring and stabilization efforts were completed at a damaged building.

Brian Richardson, chief administrative officer for the City of Jonesboro, confirmed to JRN Tuesday that stabilization on the building at 219A S. Main St is complete. The street had been closed between Huntington and Cate Avenues after a portion of a front column separated and collapsed onto the sidewalk last Friday.

While the road is back open, Richardson advised drivers should expect some minimal, cone-directed traffic adjustments over the next few days as contractors finish remaining cosmetic and repair work.

“Please use caution when traveling through the area and pay close attention to cones and temporary traffic patterns while contractors complete their remaining work,” he said.

Richardson extended the city’s gratitude to the building owner, engineer, and contractors “who took immediate action and worked quickly to address the issue and safely reopen the street.”

The shutdown began when a portion of the building’s front column separated and fell on Aug. 7. No injuries were reported, and the building was immediately evacuated as a precaution.

An independent structural engineer identified the fallen debris as part of a larger stability issue requiring urgent attention. To ensure public safety, the city temporarily established a recommended collapse zone of 1.5 times the building’s height to protect pedestrians and drivers from potential falling bricks.

Despite the street closure, city officials previously assured the public that the situation was not a repeat of the extensive, multi-year closures caused by the former Citizens Bank building in 2024.
