Jonesboro, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – Aug 16, 2024 – The Jonesboro Police Department is making notable strides in enhancing community safety and mental health support through its Crisis Response Unit (CRU).
Officially active since May, the CRU is spearheaded by a dedicated team consisting of JPD Officer Rayonica Thomas, JPD Officer Rachel Griffin, Arisa Health Co-Responder Therapist Trisha Craig, and Crisis Response Coordinator Sherry Adams. This initiative shows a vital commitment to addressing mental health crises in Jonesboro.
One of the core objectives of the CRU is to facilitate jail diversion and provide mental health assistance.
Data from the first few months of the program reveals promising outcomes. In May, the department responded to 126 Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) calls, with the CRU managing 52 of these cases directly. Only 7 of these calls led to actual arrests. The following month, June, saw an increase to 146 CIT calls, with 45 managed by the CRU and 10 resulting in arrests.
Adams told JRN, “While the ultimate goal is to achieve zero arrests, the reality of certain situations means that arrests are sometimes unavoidable.”
The impact of integrating a therapist into the team cannot be overstated. The presence of a mental health professional has been instrumental in transforming how crises are managed. The early numbers suggest that this collaborative approach is effective, and the CRU is indeed on the right path.
Another crucial aspect of the CRU’s work involves addressing recidivism among frequent callers. This may include referring individuals to counseling, engaging with family members to discuss available services, and guiding families on steps needed for potential involuntary admissions. Although it’s a difficult topic, sometimes committing a loved one to treatment can be necessary for their well-being and recovery.
The CRU’s approach is also seeing a growing trust within the community. An increasing number of individuals are requesting CIT officers specifically, showing that the rapport built with the officers and their proven resources are making a significant difference. With a large majority of Jonesboro officers now CIT certified, there is always a qualified officer on duty to provide assistance, even if the CRU is occupied.
Overall, the Jonesboro Police Department’s Crisis Response Unit represents a forward-thinking model of integrating mental health support with law enforcement, demonstrating a commitment to both effective crisis management and compassionate community care.
