Jonesboro, AR – Jonesboro Right Now – A Jonesboro woman faces multiple charges after police said she chased another vehicle at high speeds while an unrestrained child was in her car.

At approximately 2:30 a.m. on Sept. 19, Jonesboro police officers saw a white minivan chasing a black SUV at high speed on Nettleton Avenue. According to a probable cause affidavit, the minivan was following only a few feet behind the SUV’s bumper with its horn blaring.

Officers intercepted the minivan, pulling it over on Kitchen Street. Police identified the driver as 24-year-old Liliana Araseli Avendano and found her six-year-old child unrestrained in the passenger seat.

The child told officers that Avendano and a man had been arguing, and she began chasing the man and refused to slow down when the child asked her to.

When officers asked Avendano why she was driving recklessly, she said she had just caught her boyfriend having an affair at a nearby gas station, the affidavit said.

Avendano was arrested at 3:02 a.m., the inmate roster for Craighead County Detention Center shows. She appeared two days later in front of District Judge David Boling, who found probable cause to charge her with the following offenses:

  • First-degree endangering the welfare of a minor (Class D felony)
  • Reckless driving (Unclassified misdemeanor)
  • Following too close (Unclassified offense)
  • Child passenger protection/no child restraint (Unclassified offense)

Avendano was given a $2,500 cash/surety bond. The roster shows she bonded out not long after the hearing at 3:45 p.m. She was also ordered to have no contact with her boyfriend.

Avendano’s next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 23.
