Jonesboro, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – Feb. 19, 2025 – Jonesboro Street Department workers are working to clear and sand roads in the aftermath of Tuesday’s wintry weather.

Street Director Steve Tippitt said on Wednesday afternoon that the work was going well as crews work 12-hour shifts, which started Tuesday, to clear roads as quickly and safely as possible.

“We have already begun our second pass on the main thoroughfares [main roads] and getting as much ice and snow off to the sides as possible,” he said, noting that the sunshine helped.

Main throughfares include Caraway Road, Main Street, Washington Avenue, Huntington Avenue, Matthews Avenue, Flint Street and Nettleton Avenue. Tippitt said the night crew will begin work on the secondary roads, such as subdivisions, Wednesday night.

According to Tippitt, he expects crews to remain on 12-hour shifts through Friday as they continue to clear the snow and ice.

With temperatures dropping into the single digits Wednesday night, trucks will be dropping sand throughout the night and into the morning to help battle any black ice that forms as water refreezes on the roads.

If people do need to get out and drive, the City of Jonesboro provided tips for winter driving on its official Facebook page. Above all it else, it said people should stay home and off the roads.

Prior to driving, people should remove snow and ice from their vehicles and should slow down with driving. People should also turn on their headlights, avoid sudden stops or turns, and increase their distance between other vehicles.

Drivers should be extra cautious on bridges and overpasses, as they become slicker faster.

If you become stranded on the roadside, stay with your vehicle. Be sure to prepare an inclement weather kit for the vehicle beforehand, which should include blankets, a snow shovel, a phone charger, road flares, jumper cables, snacks and water.

If involved in a vehicle accident and if the vehicles are moveable, drivers should exit the roadway and enter a parking lot, then contact law enforcement for a report.
