Jonesboro, AR — (JonesboroRightNow.com) — July 11, 2025 — Jonesboro Public Schools is mourning the death of one of its students, Daylen “Dayday” Elijah Thomas.

Thomas, 16, attended The Academies at Jonesboro High School, having completed his sophomore year. He died July 3, according to his obituary. He participated in the Special Olympics in the Jonesboro area, “where his spirit and determination shined.”

“Dayday was a sweet, respectful son and a protective brother. He was full of life, laughter, and love — with a smile that could brighten any room,” his obituary read. “Dayday adored his iPad, cherished all things Elmo, and found joy in the simple things. Some of his happiest moments were spent alongside his younger sister, Laylah, with whom he shared a special bond.”

A celebration of life ceremony will take place Saturday, July 12, at 10 a.m. at Emerson Funeral Home, located at 1629 E. Nettleton Ave. Burial will follow at Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will take place before the service, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

In Thomas’s honor and in lieu of flowers, the family requested donations be made to 80/20 Learning for Autism, located at 1805 Executive Square in Jonesboro.

“Jonesboro Public Schools is saddened by the loss of one of our students, Daylen Thomas,” a Facebook post from the district said. “Prayers go out to his family and friends.”
