Jonesboro, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – July 29, 2024 – A broken vehicle brake light led to a drug bust over the weekend.

Jonesboro Police officers conducted a traffic stop and noticed that the female driver seemed nervous. Police also asked for the ID of a female passenger in the front seat, but she refused.

A man in the back seat, eventually identified as Kevin Mason, also refused to give officers his ID, and he was acting weird according to the JPD report narrative. Mason kept his hand over his face and was looking in the other direction while he spoke with the officer.

Police checked their database for the driver’s information and the report showed recent pending charges for controlled substances. Other officers arrived on scene and asked everyone to get out of the vehicle so that they could deploy a K9 to conduct a search. Once Mason was out of the vehicle, he took off running.

Officers warned him to stop, or K9 Frost would go from being “drug sniffer” to “suspect apprehender” really quick.

K9 Frost was deployed and caught up with Mason. The dog bit Mason on the upper right arm. Even with the K9 still on him, Mason refused to do what the officers told him to. It was then Mason started hitting Frost in the face as the officers wrestled to get control of him.

Mason was able to get one hand free and slammed Frost’s face onto the pavement. Frost lost his grip but was able to recover and engaged Mason again. Officers were eventually able to get him under control.

Police then took Frost back to the vehicle to conduct a search. There was an open container of alcohol in the back seat, as well as a backpack. Both of the other subjects in the vehicle said that the backpack belonged to Mason. Officers found two plastic bags of meth, containing about 15 grams, a broken glass pipe, and a plastic straw with drug residue.

At his probable cause hearing Monday Mason was charged with multiple felonies, including the injury of an animal used by law enforcement.

His bond was set at $150,000.
