Jonesboro, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – A Jonesboro man reportedly involved in a late February shooting was given a $1 million bond after being accused of attempting to commit murder.
On Feb. 28, Jonesboro Police responded to an address on North Drake Street regarding a shooting. Upon their arrival, there was a confrontation with a man, later identified as 64-year-old Leroy Starks. After a brief struggle, Starks was taken into custody, according to the probable cause affidavit.
Officers later found a female victim with apparent gunshot wounds. According to the affidavit, Starks had been drinking when he and the female victim, his wife, began arguing. Two female witnesses in the home tried to calm the situation, the affidavit said, when Starks went to the bedroom and got a gun.
Starks reportedly began shooting at the witnesses before turning and shooting his wife. According to the affidavit, Starks shot multiple times and caused three injuries to his wife: one in the chin, one in the neck, and one in her left hand. The affidavit noted that the hand wounds appeared to be from the victim trying to shield herself.
According to a Feb. 28 news release from JPD, the victim was treated on scene before being taken to an area hospital. The victim was listed as being in “critical condition.”
Starks was charged with one count of 1st degree criminal attempt to commit murder, one count of 1st degree domestic battery, one count of possession of a firearm by certain persons, two counts of aggravated assault and one count of resisting arrest/refusal to submit.
He was given a $1 million cash or surety bond. Starks is to have no contact with the victim and must wear a GPS ankle monitor if he makes bond. The probable cause affidavit notes that Starks has a “violent history.”
