Jonesboro, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – July 23, 224 – When throwing away trash we may not think too much about what we are throwing away or how we are disposing of the waste. But did you know that there are rules to throwing trash away?

For your everyday household trash, the Jonesboro Sanitation Department prefers that there is not any loose garbage as that can make unnecessary messes when dumping into the truck. It is recommended that all garbage is bagged.

In addition, there are things that cannot be thrown away, this includes liquid paint, liquids, tires, oil, batteries, similar automotive-related items, anything that could cause a fire or could explode, compressed gas cylinders (except normal aerosol cans from household products), ammunition, black powder, blasting agents, construction waste, rocks, brick, mortar, concrete, and yard waste.

If you have paint to dispose of, it must be dried prior. You can dry out paint by pouring kitty litter, newspaper, or sand and leaving the lid off for a few days. Once it has dried you can take it to the landfill.

Keep in mind that the city uses automated collection trucks, so any loose trash or bag of trash outside of the garbage will not be picked up.

Your trash cans must be at least five feet away from any mailbox, vehicles, and not sitting under something such as a basketball goal or high line wires.

Your trash can must be out no later than 6:00 a.m. on your designated collection day.

Yard waste is picked up twice a month on your designated trash collection day, though the city recommends that you take your yard waste directly to the city incinerator at 2650 Lacy Drive for faster service. To dispose of yard waste, put it in a paper bag or a reusable container that is no larger than 32 gallons. Be sure to label it a “YARD WASTE” and that each bag or container is no more than 20 pounds. The city will accept grass, twigs, sticks, garden clippings, and leaves. Please don’t throw away sticks larger than two feet long or 3 inches in diameter, stumps, dirt, and rocks. If you have large sticks or tree limbs that need to be disposed of, you can take those directly to the city incinerator, or they can be picked up once a month, though there is no set schedule. The trucks will work in a certain trash pick up area until it has been served, then will move onto the next. The city asks that tree limbs be no larger than ten feet long and eight inches across.

When it comes to recycling, use one of the blue recycling bins. You can recycle #1 and #2 plastics, aluminum cans, tin cans, corrugated cardboard, lightweight cardboard, magazines, newspapers, office paper, mailings, and shredded paper that is in tied bags. Things that can’t be recycled include empty bags, oil, glass, styrofoam, electronics, and food waste. If you would like to recycle your glass, please take it to the Recycling Center located at 806 Burke Street.

If you have any large or bulky items like furniture, construction material, appliances, electronics, and other items, this can be taken directly to Legacy Landfill located at Highway 1 South and County Road 476.
