Paragould, AR – Jonesboro Right Now – On Greene County Tech’s homecoming night, the team put on a show for the students and alumni with a 38-20 blowout against the Brookland Bearcats.

Starting off, the Bearcats received the kickoff at their own 40-yard line. A 32-yard bomb kickstarted the offense and led Brookland straight into the red zone, where two rushes from quarterback Layton Byler made the first strike of the game. However, a botched extra point attempt gave them only a 6-0 lead.

GCT immediately got a boost from a Brookland pass interference penalty on their first drive, foreshadowing crucial mistakes that would hurt the Bearcats all night. Following the penalty, GCT established a dominant rushing attack that pounded the Bearcats’ defensive line until the final whistle.

Running back Ashton Addison delivered the first major blow with a 33-yard rush, setting up a 16-yard touchdown run for Davontae Williams. With 4:17 left in the first quarter, the Eagles snatched a 7-6 advantage.

Brookland advanced into Eagles territory on the ensuing drive, but disaster struck. After wide receiver Jackson Fleer caught a pass at the 29-yard line, Eagles safety Kayden McDermott punched the ball out of his hands, forcing the game’s first turnover.

GCT rode that momentum into the second quarter, where their rushing completely took over. After two big defensive stops from the Bearcats, GCT switched it up with a 34-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 14-6.

Brookland’s woes continued. After an overthrown snap and a sack backed them up into a fourth-and-22, things got worse for the Bearcats. The punter’s knee touched the ground as he caught the snap, resulting in a turnover on downs at their own 39-yard line. With great field position, the Eagles capitalized with a 12-yard touchdown pass, putting them up 21-6 at the half.

Coming out of the break, GCT put their foot on the gas with a field goal on their opening drive. Defensively, the Eagles clamped down on Byler. Instead of relying purely on a defensive line push, GCT heavily covered his intended targets, resulting in constant pass breakups and inaccurate throws.

This coverage led to a quick three-and-out. To further dampen the Bearcats’ momentum, another botched punt gave the Eagles the ball in the red zone. GCT easily scored their second rushing touchdown of the game, building a comfortable 31-6 advantage.

Despite the blunders, Brookland kept fighting. Shifting to a ground approach, the Bearcats hammered the GCT defensive line for their second touchdown of the game, though a failed two-point conversion kept the deficit at 19 points.

The Brookland defense finally forced a GCT punt early in the fourth quarter, but the offensive rhythm was short-lived. Byler threw his first interception on the ensuing possession, and the teams ultimately traded turnovers on downs as GCT’s secondary continued to clog receiver routes.

GCT’s running game delivered the final blow on their next drive. Advancing across the field on short, substantial gains, a 22-yard rush gave the Eagles their last score of the night, pushing the lead to 38-12.

Showing signs of life a little too late, Brookland’s offense found a healthy balance of passing and rushing on their final possession. The momentum pushed them to a 5-yard rushing touchdown to end the game 38-20.

As the Eagles evened their season record at 3-3, Brookland dropped further below the .500 mark at 2-4. GCT will look to keep their momentum going into their match with Nettleton, and Brookland will try to bounce back against Valley View as both take on their opponents at home next Friday.
