Former Monette mayor Jerry “Chubs” Qualls

Qualls moved to Monette after retirement, where he was approached by the outgoing mayor to run for the position, according to his obituary. He was elected as mayor in 2007 and served for three terms, or 12 years. He was succeeded by Mayor Bob Blankenship.

During his time as mayor, Dave and Karen Wallace donated the Monette State Bank to the City of Monette. Qualls transformed the building into the Buffalo Island Museum, which had its grand opening in 2009. Qualls helped acquire artifacts for the museum and served on its board until his death.

He is survived by his wife, son, brother, sister, seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
