Jonesboro, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – Dec. 11, 2024 – The Fisher Street Community in Action (FSCIA) started serving free soup every Wednesday to combat hunger in Jonesboro.
FSCIA Founder Rev. Dr. Charles Coleman said everyone is welcome at the Free Soup Wednesdays, which started last week and will continue through April. It starts at 5 p.m. every Wednesday at the corner of Bridge Street and East Johnson Avenue.
Free Soup Wednesdays was created by FSCIA Board Member Debbie Johnson.
“Debbie Johnson, about a year ago, contacted me,” he said. “She said I want to do something. She said, ‘God has put it on my mind’ and she said it exactly like that… ‘God has put it on my mind that we could do soup because we’re not doing enough for the homeless.’ And I thought about it, but in my spirit, I already said yes.”
However, plans had to be halted due to Johnson breaking a hip. That didn’t stop her wanting to serve the homeless, and she called Coleman again about three weeks ago. The two visited with Jonesboro Police Chief Rick Elliott to ensure their idea was in line with city regulations.
“You know, I’m on the City Council. So, we wanted to make sure we had our ducks in a row,” he said. “After we got to talk with Rick Elliott, he was as excited. Man, somebody wanted to do something, and I said, ‘Well, let’s make sure this is clear. I’m in charge of Fisher Street Community in Action, but this is her thing and I’m going to support her.’ And so that’s what we’ve done.”
FSCIA had its first Free Soup Wednesday last week, with a few people showing up.
“It wasn’t but a couple, but the couple is more than one if you know what I mean,” Coleman said. “This whole thing is just a whole blessing to be able to help you in the community.”
