Jonesboro, AR — (JonesboroRightNow.com) — July 22, 2025 — Jonesboro and northeast Arkansas are under an extreme heat warning this week.

According to the National Weather Service, the warning goes into effect July 22 at 11 a.m. and remains in effect until 8 p.m. Another warning will go into effect July 23 at 11 a.m. and remain active until 8 p.m.

The NWS said “dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 112 [are] expected.” Portions of east Arkansas, north Mississippi, southwest Missouri and west Tennessee will all be affected.

In Jonesboro this week, high temperatures hover around the upper 90s and lows will be around the mid to high 70s. The heat index is estimated to be 110 degrees. Clear, sunny skies are forecasted.

To stay safe, drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms whenever possible, stay out of the sun, and be sure to check on friends and family. When outside, be sure to wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothes, limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours and take action if you notice heatstroke/heat exhaustion symptoms.

Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. The NWS said heatstroke is an emergency and 911 should be called. Click here for symptoms of various heat illnesses.

Additionally, the City of Jonesboro has free cooling stations across the city for anyone needing to cool off. Jonesboro Economical Transit buses will provide free rides to anyone needing one of the cooling centers, as well as the Salvation Army of Jonesboro.

    • Monday-Friday: 9 a.m.-9 p.m., Saturday: 12 p.m.-5 p.m.
  • Jonesboro Youth Community Center (1421 W. Nettleton Ave.)
    • Monday-Friday: 9 a.m.-9 p.m., Saturday: 12 p.m.-5 p.m.

Additionally, those needing an overnight cooling shelter may stay at the Jonesboro Salvation Army shelter, located at 800 Cate Ave. JET will provide free rides to this location as well.
