Jonesboro, AR – Jonesboro Right Now – The Jonesboro City Council on Thursday approved a resolution that will install new pedestrian safety infrastructure in downtown Jonesboro.
According to the resolution, pedestrian all-stops would be installed at three intersections along Washington Avenue in downtown Jonesboro. Each all-stop is estimated to cost $100,000, bringing total project costs to $300,000. The Public Safety Council Committee forwarded the resolution to the full council in September.

The all-stops are connected to each other, so if a pedestrian activates on stop, traffic in all directions will be paused. This includes right turns on red lights. They will be installed at the following intersections:
- Union Street/Washington Avenue
- Main Street/Washington Avenue
- Church Street/Washington Avenue
The city’s director of engineering, Craig Light, previously said while the system should “recover very quickly” after a pedestrian activates an all-stop, it will still create delays to motorists.
The idea of pedestrian all-stops at various downtown Jonesboro intersections has been in the works since March, after a fatal pedestrian accident in which the driver had a green light to make a left turn.
The resolution was approved on the consent agenda. Items on the consent agenda are considered to be routine business and are enacted by one motion of the City Council with no discussion. The council’s meeting was rescheduled from its usual Tuesday to Thursday due to National Night Out.
