Jonesboro, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – June 5, 2024 – The campsite at the Jonesboro Craighead Forest Park keeps busy.
During a visit to the campground on Wednesday morning, several people staying there were local to Northeast Arkansas, but several were not.
Wayne Kender from Jonesboro had a recreational vehicle that he was staying at with his brother, Bob, from Cardwell, MO. “We’ve been at it for years,” Wayne said. “We’ve never had a bad experience here.” He said they’ve stayed at the park three or four times.
Norman Collins, from Annieville, near Imboden, is a volunteer “park host.” He’s been coming to Craighead Forest Park for eight years. He helps people staying at the campground find their way around. The campground has electric hookups, washer and dryers, showers, and other amenities.
“We’ve been coming here for eight years,” Collins said. “It’s a peaceful, quiet place.”
A U.S. Army veteran, Collins said people from all over the country come to the campground.
“A lot of traffic is grandparents coming to see their grandkids,” he said.
Collins said a lot of the people who come to the campground are from Northeast Arkansas, people from Jonesboro, Wynne, Lake City, Harrisburg and other local areas.
Danny Kapales, director of Jonesboro Parks and Recreation, said the campground is consistently three-quarters full at any given time. He said the offerings at the site draws visitors. The maximum stay is 28 days.
He said many people who stop are just traveling through and find out about it on the internet.
