Brookland, AR – JonesboroRightNow.com – A Brookland man is being held on a $150,000 cash/surety bond and faces several charges after police said he led them on a high-speed chase that resulted in multiple people getting hurt.

According to the probable cause affidavit, on April 24, Arkansas State Trooper Nash Thomas was notified by Troop C Communications that Brookland police were in pursuit of a vehicle and requesting assistance.

Thomas saw the vehicle, driven by 20-year-old Chase Michael Phillips, on Kathleen Street approaching Highland Drive, and attempted to stop him. However, Phillips sped away, and the chase continued, with speeds reaching nearly 100 miles per hour.

As Phillips approached Heath Lane, the driver of another vehicle in the eastbound inside lane noticed Thomas’ emergency blue lights behind them and moved into a turn lane to yield. However, Phillips got in the westbound inside lane before swerving back into the eastbound lane.

The other vehicle attempted to avoid Phillips but was hit in the rear at approximately 80 miles per hour. This caused the vehicle to cross into the westbound lanes, where it hit a second vehicle, and both vehicles ran off the road. Four people were taken to a hospital for their injuries.

Phillips came to a stop in the westbound lanes and was taken into custody without incident. Police noted that Phillips had an odor of marijuana emitting from him, and marijuana was found inside the vehicle. The affidavit stated that Phillips made multiple statements regarding smoking “bad weed.” He was taken to a hospital for medical clearance and a legal blood draw, then, after being cleared, to the Craighead County Detention Center.

On April 29, Phillips appeared before District Judge David Boling. He found probable cause to charge Philips with the following:

  • Fleeing in a vehicle – substantial danger of death (Class C felony)
  • Second-degree battery (Class D felony)
  • Driving while intoxicated (DWI) – drugs (Unclassified misdemeanor)
  • Reckless (Unclassified misdemeanor)
  • Speeding more than 15 miles per hour over the speed limit (Class C misdemeanor)
  • No driver’s license (Unclassified misdemeanor)
  • No liability insurance (Unclassified misdemeanor)
  • Possession of a Schedule VI substance less than four ounces (Class A misdemeanor)

In addition to the $150,000 bond, Phillips was ordered to wear a GPS and Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) monitor upon release.

Phillips’ next court appearance is scheduled for June 26. If convicted on all charges, he faces up to 18 years in prison and fines up to $22,100.
