Bay, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – A Bay man is behind bars on a $250,000 cash/surety bond after police said he was found walking on a school’s parking lot while armed with a pistol.
District Judge Tommy Fowler found probable cause Nov. 7 to charge 42-year-old Christopher Antonio Evans with possession of a firearm by certain persons and possession of a firearm on school property.
According to the affidavit, on Nov. 6, Bay police chief Keith Milam contacted an officer about Evans, who was walking in front of the Bay High School and possibly armed. He was found walking through the school parking lot near Main Street.
The officer attempted to make contact with Evans, advising Evans to come to him. Evans began walking between student vehicles in the parking lot. While doing so, the officer noticed he was reaching around his waistline while moving behind a car, according to the affidavit. The officer pulled out his firearm and pointed it at Evans, telling him to show his hands.
The affidavit said the officer heard the sound of a metal object hitting the pavement while Evans was behind a red car. He soon began walking toward the officer, ignoring commands.
While trying to get Evans to comply, the officer heard the bell ring for classes to switch. Knowing the students would be coming out in the parking lot, the officer holstered his weapon as Evans raised his hands and placed him into custody, the affidavit said.
While at the scene, police found a 9mm pistol on the ground behind the red car where Evans had been. In a Mirandized interview, Evans denied the pistol was his, adding that he was a felon and on probation.
At Friday’s hearing, Fowler noted that Evans had prior failure to appear charges and was on a suspended imposition of a sentence. Because of this, Evans was given his $250,000 bond. In addition, he was also ordered to wear a GPS ankle monitor due to his prior FTAs.
Evans is scheduled to be back in court on Dec. 16.
