Jonesboro, AR — (JonesboroRightNow.com) — July 14, 2025 — It’s time again for Northeast Arkansas residents to roll up their sleeves and support Jonesboro’s first responders at the annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive.

During this event, participants will choose the winner by donating on behalf of either the Jonesboro Police Department or the Jonesboro Fire Department. Jonesboro Police Chief Rick Elliott said he gives every year and encourages others to give on behalf of the police department.

“The Battle of the Badges between police and fire is a yearly event and we try to have a little friendly competition between them on who can get enough blood donations for the much worthy cause — American Red Cross,” Elliott said. “So, if you’re a supporter of first responders and want to give the lifesaving gift of blood, come on out to the event and make that donation. We would appreciate the support.”

Summer is a critical time for blood donations, with donation appointments decreasing due to family vacations and schools not being in session. There is also increased demand for blood during the summer, due to traumatic injuries from car accidents, outdoor activities and more, according to America’s Blood Centers, an organization serving blood donation centers across the country.

Elliott said this is why Jonesboro’s first responder agencies tried to host a big blood drive event in the summer. He added that both police and firemen invite family and friends to come out and give every year on their behalf because both departments want a good turnout at the event for the Red Cross.

Jonesboro Fire Chief Martin Hamrick agreed, noting the fire department would appreciate as many donations as possible.

“We would just like for everybody to come out. Blood donations are always needed, and it’s a very important thing to have in a community,” Hamrick said. “At this particular time, we’re doing a Battle of the Badges between the fire department and the police department, and we’d like to have everyone sign up and support the fire department. The more donations we can get on our behalf, the better off we will be beating the PD.”

The blood drive will be held on Monday, July 21, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Earl Bell Community Center, located at 1212 S. Church St.
