Jonesboro, AR (JonesboroRightNow.com) – March 4, 2024 – A pair of Arkansas State men’s basketball standouts earned All-Sun Belt Conference honors, as the league office announced its annual postseason honors on Monday.
Senior guard Caleb Fields was voted First Team All-Sun Belt Conference, while Taryn Todd earned third-team distinction. The duo helped lead the Red Wolves to an 11-7 conference record and the No. 4 seed in the upcoming conference tournament. The 11 league wins are the most by an A-State team since 2016-17 (11) while the No. 4 seed is the program’s highest non-divisional seeding since being seeded fourth in 2014.
The pair’s honors marks the first time since 2020-21 in which multiple A-State players earned all-league acclaim.
Fields – who is receiving his first All-Sun Belt honor of his career – enters postseason play atop the league leaderboards in assists (169) and assists per game (5.8) while ranking second in assist/turnover ratio (2.6). The Lewisburg, Tenn., who averaged a team-leading 14.0 points in conference games, has helped guide the conference’s top offensive unit with 117 dimes in league play (6.5) per game with a conference-best assist/turnover mark of 3.2. The two-time SBC Player of the Week awardee ranks tied for second nationally with six games of 10-plus assists – more than the rest of the Sun Belt combined – and is one of five players in the country with multiple 20-point/10-assist performances.
In his career, Fields ranks fourth in Sun Belt history and second in school history in assists (645), while also taking ownership of the program records in games started (134) and free throws attempted (692).
Todd is leading A-State in scoring entering the conference tourney, averaging 12.7 points per game as one of four players averaging double figures. In conference play, Todd upped that average to 13.2 points per game, and has scored in double figures in 13 of 18 league contests, including seven of the last eight entering Pensacola. The Vaughan, Ontario, Canada, native also leads the team with 32 steals and is shooting 40.8 percent from the floor. He also is tied for the team lead with 20 games of 10 or more points and matches Fields with a team-high five 20-point outputs.
