Jonesboro, AR – Contributed – Arkansas State (22-8, 12-4 SBC) was unable to complete the comeback against Troy (24-5, 15-2 SBC), falling 54-61 Tuesday evening at First National Bank Arena.
The Red Wolves landed 29 percent of their attempts (20-of-69) and only 19 percent from deep (4-of-21), with Troy finding 35 percent of their field goals (22-of-62), and 28 percent from three (5-of-18). Zyion Shannon led A-State with 15 points, supported by Crislyn Rose’s 12 and Mia Tarver’s 11.
The Red Wolves scored first, but a Trojan three took the lead, one which they never gave back. Troy went on a 12-0 run and outscored Arkansas State 20-12 in the first period. A-State struggled to close the gap throughout the first half, with Troy keeping a 10-point lead heading into halftime.
The Red Wolves entered the third quarter swinging, with Tarver landing two threes and a 7-0 run for A-State, combined with a triple from Bella Weary hitting a three in the final second to step into the final quarter down one possession, 43-46.
Scoring slowed overall, with only four total field goals made between both teams across five minutes. The Red Wolves only found the basket once in the last three minutes, while Troy shot free throws to extend their lead late.
