Jonesboro, AR — (JonesboroRightNow.com) — Aug. 4, 2025 — A Jonesboro woman is being held on a $100,000 cash/surety bond after being arrested in connection with Saturday night’s shooting.
Craighead County Judge Tommy Fowler found probable cause Aug. 4 to charge 33-year-old Chavelia Joyner with first-degree battery. Joyner was arrested after police responded to a shooting that took place in the 300 block of State Street at 9:39 p.m. Aug. 2.
According to the affidavit, when officers arrived on scene, they found a victim with an injury to their ankle “that was consistent with a graze wound from a bullet.” The victim told officers that there was a large crowd, and several women began fighting each other. Blood was also found on the ground.
One of the women pulled out a gun and fired a single shot into the crowd, the affidavit said. Afterward, the woman got into a nearby vehicle along with another woman and left the scene. Police said the victim gave them a license plate number that returned to a vehicle Joyner owned.
While heading to the scene, another officer was told that a victim with a gunshot wound arrived at the NEA Baptist Hospital. After stopping by the shooting scene, the officer met with the victim at the hospital. The victim said several people told them by text that Joyner shot them. The victim added that they were dating a family member of Joyner’s and provided their address.
When police arrived at the home, they noticed the vehicle registered to Joyner was there. They knocked on the door and a woman with blood on her shirt opened the door, the affidavit said. She explained that she was at State Street when the shooting happened and confirmed Joyner fired the weapon. However, Joyner was not at home, so police called her. She agreed to come to the police department for an interview.
The affidavit said upon her arrival, Joyner said she had recently drunk alcohol and was unable to be interviewed. Joyner was arrested and taken to the Craighead County Detention Center.
During Monday’s court appearance, Fowler gave Joyner a $100,000 cash/surety bond and ordered her to have no contact with the victims. Fowler noted he was “very disturbed” by the facts in the case.
Joyner’s next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 30.
Meanwhile, Jonesboro police continue to investigate another shooting that happened in the 300 block of State Street after 11 a.m. Aug. 3.
A JPD Facebook post said a victim arrived at the hospital shortly after the shooting had occurred. No suspect has been arrested at this time, and the post indicated that police believe the two shootings are unrelated. Joyner’s affidavit also does not make mention of the second shooting.
