Jonesboro, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – May 29, 2024 – I hate to say it, but I’ve joined the trend. Although I’ve never been one to participate in sports (unless you count cheerleading for 8 years – and you should), and most certainly not one with ball coordination, between my parents and my boyfriend, I’ve recently jumped on the Pickleball bandwagon. And I have to admit… I like it.

It’s obvious that this one sport is swiftly gaining traction and turning heads. It’s fun, easily accessible, and great for all ages. What began as a casual backyard pastime has evolved into a trending hit that captivates enthusiasts of all fitness levels. So, what exactly is pickleball, and why is it so popular?

The sport was invented in 1965 by three dads on Bainbridge Island, Washington who were looking for a way to keep their kids entertained during the summer. Pickleball is often described as a hybrid of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, and is played with paddles and a plastic ball on a court about a quarter of the size of a tennis court.

Its smaller dimensions make it ideal for players of varying ages and abilities, and the sports strategy outweighs raw athleticism. Anyone can play it (I’m telling you, if I can, you can). Its inclusivity is a major draw that attracts individuals who may have felt intimidated by more traditional sports, but also gives those who did/do play sports a chance to hone in on coordination skills in a fun way.

I think its surge in popularity is its simple enjoyment factor. Whether a seasoned athlete or a novice, there’s a thrill and physical release in hitting the ball across the net and engaging in a fast-paced rally against friends. You’re also likely to make newfound friends who love the sport. The game’s social aspect fosters camaraderie and community, and it’s not uncommon to see multi-generational groups bonding over the game and bridging age divide (my parents beat me every time, by the way).

Of course, I’m most interested in its health benefits, which further contribute to its widespread acclaim. It’s amazing to see those who don’t like to exercise get a cardiovascular workout that helps to improve their heart health and stamina. What’s even better is that it doesn’t come with as much injury risk as other sports, too, which I often see as a Doctor of Physical Therapy. When participating regularly, it can prove to be an effective way to maintain or lose weight without the dread of hopping on the treadmill or elliptical.

The dynamic nature of the game requires players to utilize their arms, legs, core, and reflexes, which results in improved strength, agility, and coordination. This can lead to enhanced balance and flexibility, reducing the risk of falls and injury, particularly in older adults. It’s also a low-impact activity, making it gentler on the joints compared to high-impact sports like running or basketball.

Lastly, learning a new sport (while incorporating motor skills with it) is one of the best ways to keep your brain sharp and prevent the risk of Alzheimer’s or cognitive decline.

Whether you’re looking to stay active, make new friends, or just try something new, pickleball does seem to be worth the hype. Locally, you can reserve a court at the Trim Gym or head to Joe Mack Park for free play. Allen Park Community Center also hosts free play on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

If you learn now, you can beat all your friends when the new Jonesboro Sports Complex is completed, which will have availability for 36+ courts!

We know how improving physical health can lead to positive changes in mental health, so it’s easy to see why the Pickleball trend has taken off – and I don’t think it’s going anywhere anytime soon. More people seem to be discovering the joy of this sport due to its positive impact on physical and mental well-being; even myself, despite my initial resistance towards the trend.
