Jonesboro, AR (JonesboroRightNow.com)– January 31, 2024 – Arkansas’ Adult Education Section within the Division of Workforce Services (Adult Education) celebrates a remarkable 20% increase in enrollment during the 2022-2023 school year, signaling a return to pre-pandemic enrollment levels. With over 16,000 Arkansans accessing Adult Education Centers and nearly 10,000 utilizing services such as GED® testing, English-language proficiency enhancement, and industry-specific training, the impact of adult education in the state is evident.

Dr. Trenia Miles, Director of the Adult Education Section, attributes this growth to the unwavering dedication of Adult Education providers in recruiting and retaining students. With an estimated 300,000 Arkansans lacking a high school diploma, the demand for Adult Education services is significant. While many enroll to earn their high school diploma or improve English skills, Adult Education also prioritizes workforce preparation, integrating skills like employability, digital literacy, and financial literacy into the curriculum.

Arkansas ranks fourth in the nation for GED® test pass rates, with an impressive 86% of students passing in the 2022-2023 academic year. This success not only drives individuals to Adult Education Centers but also serves as an entry point to other free programs like integrated education and training, computer literacy initiatives, and job readiness programs like Workforce Alliance for Growth in the Economy (WAGE™).

To sustain this momentum, Adult Education is expanding collaborations with partner programs and Arkansas employers, aiming to increase apprenticeship opportunities statewide. Dr. Miles emphasizes the importance of dual enrollment, noting that individuals enrolled in multiple programs enhance their success and employment prospects.

Bridget Criner, Associate Director of the Adult Education Section, highlights the department’s commitment to aligning programs with Arkansas’ workforce needs through rigorous research and collaboration with core partners and local Workforce Development Boards.

Arkansas Adult Education offers various avenues for individuals to access services, whether through online resources or by calling 1-877-963-4GED (4433). As enrollment continues to surge, Adult Education remains steadfast in its mission to empower Arkansans through education and skill development, paving the way for a brighter future for individuals and the state as a whole.
