The Arkansas State University family mourns the loss of longtime supporters, ambassadors and alumni Steve and Sharon Bryant, who both passed away Sunday, May 12.
The Bryants both earned bachelor’s degrees from Arkansas State University, and Steve lettered as a defensive end at A-State.
“Loved and respected by so many, we are saddened by the loss of Steve and Sharon Bryant,” said A-State Vice Chancellor for Intercollegiate Athletics Jeff Purinton. “First and foremost, they were great people who cared deeply about their family, friends and communities and gave selflessly to help provide opportunities for others. They were truly wonderful ambassadors for Arkansas State University and the Athletics Department, and their impact on our student-athletes and department will always be remembered.”
Steve earned his degree in business with a minor in pre-pharmacy, while Sharon graduated with a degree in mathematics and minor in English. The couple were longtime season-ticket holders and generous donors to A-State Athletics, including a major gift in 2009. The name “Steve Bryant Family Head Coach’s Suite” is attached to the wall outside the head football coach’s office at the Centennial Bank Athletics Operations Center.
“Steve and Sharon Bryant meant so much to so many people at our university, within our football family and beyond,” said A-State head football coach Butch Jones. “The positive influence they had on not only our football organization, but on their communities and those around them is immeasurable. We’re beyond thankful that they will always be part of our Red Wolves family, and we extend our thoughts and prayers to their family and friends.”
Roy Ockert reflected on his friendship with the Bryants:
“He was a close friend and fraternity brother. He and his wife sat beside us at A-State football games for more than 20 years. He was a standout football player for ASU in the 1970s. He played for A-State from 1970-72, including the undefeated team of 1970 led by Bennie Ellender.
“He went open to earn a pharmacy doctorate and owned Bryant’s Pharmacy and Healthcare Center in Batesville, as well as several other pharmacies in North Arkansas. At one time I think that included Stone’s Pharmacy in Jonesboro, but I believe he sold it.
“For many years Steve volunteered his services as a pilot and his plane to help the ASU Athletic Department in recruiting and for other purposes. He was still an active member of the Lettermen’s Club and a strong supporter of A-State.
“I’ve attached a photo taken at a 2019 game, showing Steve and Sharon in front at right, my wife Pat and me at the left front. Behind us are ASU general counsel Brad Phelps, local attorney John Phelps and his wife Dianne, who sat right behind us on the second row. My recollection is that Kelly Damphousse took the picture.
“This is a devastating loss for Batesville, his family, A-State and everyone who knew them.”
