Jonesboro, AR – Jonesboro Right Now – An ordinance that would have established a sports tourism committee has been tabled indefinitely.

The committee would have been responsible for determining the best practices, operational methods, and tourism strategies regarding youth sports, serving in a strictly advisory role.

Members would have included representatives from the Public Facilities Board, Advertising and Promotion Commission, the chair of the Public Services Committee, and five at-large members with experience in youth sports, sports tourism, recreational management, nonprofit governance, or any other related field.

The decision follows a nearly hour-long, special-called meeting of the Public Services Council Committee on Monday, in which forming the committee was further discussed. No legislative action was taken in that meeting, although several members of the Parks Advisory Board and public voiced their opinions on the matter.

“It was a very productive meeting on both sides,” Public Services Council Committee Chairman Chris Gibson said of Monday’s meeting. “I think we’ve come to a conclusion that we’re going to try to move forward in a different direction.”

He asked for a motion to table the ordinance indefinitely, which the council unanimously approved. The ordinance was not further discussed.

Possibly forming the committee had been discussed as early as February and was forwarded to the city council in late April by the Public Services Council Committee, where it had one reading.
