Jonesboro, AR – JonesboroRightNow.com – A Jonesboro man is being held on a $150,000 cash/surety bond after police said they found his disabled mother, whom he was caretaking, was being neglected while he was under the influence.

According to a probable cause affidavit, on Feb. 5, Jonesboro police officers responded to a home on Tealwood Drive following a report that a victim was being neglected by her son and primary caregiver, 41-year-old Daniel Erik Holmes.

Upon entering the home, officers came across an overwhelming odor of human waste. They found piles of bedding and clothing in the garage and throughout the home that appeared to be heavily soiled with urine and feces. Officers then found the victim, who was known to be disabled and bedridden, lying in a bed with sheets saturated in urine.

The victim told police that since her husband’s death in December 2025, Holmes had served as her sole caregiver. She explained that he routinely failed to clean her or change her soiled bedding, forced her to lie in her own waste, and provided insufficient nutrition, noting she had only been fed crackers that day.

The affidavit goes on to say that Holmes took the victim’s phone to prevent her from calling for help and that she was in fear of Holmes, who would become verbally abusive and aggressive toward her due to “involuntary physical movements” due to her disability.

During the visit, officers noticed Holmes was physically unstable with slurred speech and extremely dilated pupils, suggesting that he was under the influence of an intoxicating substance while taking care of the victim.

Emergency medical services arrived at the scene and evaluated the victim, discovering extensive rashes and raw, open skin under her arms and breasts. Police attributed this to prolonged exposure to waste and lack of hygiene.

The roster for the Craighead County Detention Center says Holmes was booked at 7:40 p.m.

Holmes appeared before District Judge David Boling on Feb. 9, who found probable cause to charge him with abuse of a vulnerable person (Class D felony) and interference with emergency communication – first-degree (Class B misdemeanor).

In addition to the $150,000 bond, Holmes was ordered to have no contact with the victim and to wear a GPS ankle monitor upon release.

Holmes’ next court appearance is scheduled for March 20.
