Jonesboro, AR – (Contributed) – My husband and I, both from Northeast Arkansas, recently moved back after 12 years in Central Missouri. While being near family was part of our decision, having more school choice was a major factor.
Our children attended public school in Missouri and generally had a good experience. However, my older daughter faced persistent bullying. She struggled in math but was far ahead in reading and language arts, where she often grew bored. Despite support from her teacher and principal, things didn’t improve, and there was no option to switch schools. Private education was beyond our means, so we began homeschooling.
When we relocated to Arkansas, we didn’t apply for the Education Freedom Account (EFA) right away but knew about it. After finding a homeschool co-op we wanted to join, I decided to apply to help cover the costs. Participating would have been a financial stretch otherwise, and the EFA made it possible.
The EFA has also allowed us to purchase valuable learning tools—science kits, phonics games, curriculum, workbooks, and math manipulatives. I now feel truly equipped to teach my children at home with the resources they need to thrive.
Homeschooling has been a wonderful change for our family. With lessons tailored to her pace, my older daughter has improved in math and is challenged in the subjects where she excels. Since learning at home, I’ve seen her grow more responsible, patient, and confident.
I’m deeply grateful for the EFA and the freedom it gives families like ours to choose what works best for our children. Coming home to Arkansas has been the right decision in every way.
