Craighead County, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – The Arkansas Department of Transportation on Wednesday announced award recipients for the 2025 Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) and Recreational Trails Program (RTP).
For 2025, a total of 60 TAP projects across Arkansas were awarded for approximately $18.9 million and seven RTP projects were awarded for approximately $1.8 million.
In Craighead County, the following received funding:
- Arkansas State University: Awarded $500,000 for ASU Campus Loop Trail
- City of Bono: Awarded $500,000 for Oak St. Multimodal Redevelopment Plan
- City of Brookland: Awarded $135,000 for Highway 49B Sidewalks Ph. 5
- City of Jonesboro: Awarded $490,000 for Higginbotham Creek Trail
According to an ARDOT news release, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act reauthorized and provided funding for TAP for programs designated as “transportation alternatives” for pedestrians, bicyclists, and other non-motorized transportation methods. The TAP is a reimbursement-type grant program, providing an 80 percent federal share and 20 percent local match from eligible applicants.
Eligible projects can include construction of on-road and off-road trail facilities such as sidewalks, bicycle infrastructure, pedestrian and bicycle signals, lighting and other safety-related infrastructure. Additionally, converting abandoned railroad corridors for bike and pedestrian trails is eligible, the news release said.
The RTP is funded through a portion of TAP funds set aside specifically for recreational trails. These funds are to be used for maintaining and restoring existing trails, developing and rehabilitating trailside/trailhead facilities and trail linkages, and building new trails.
