Jonesboro, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – Sept. 22, 2025 – The Craighead County Quorum Court on Monday unanimously approved an ordinance that would authorize a study on combining the offices of County Treasurer and Collector.

The study would determine how effective consolidating the two offices would be.

Its findings would then go before the quorum court, which, if found to be effective, would result in the court proposing another ordinance to combine the offices. This would go before voters in the 2026 election. The offices would be combined Jan. 1, 2030, if it passed.

“I’m looking forward to seeing this when it comes back, especially for the internal controls that the analysis will have,” Justice of the Peace for District 2 Garrett Barnes said. “I hope it goes into a lot of detail on that for us, especially with the authority in that department, if it were to be before the voters, you know, not having a second elected official in that capacity, making sure that somebody in that office has the authority to check and balance the elected official, if it were to be consolidated.”

While presenting the ordinance in a previous committee meeting, Craighead County Marvin Day said it could be a cost-saving measure, potentially saving the county around $150,000.

He also previously said it would not pit current elected officials against each other, as people considering running for the offices would have significant leeway to know they were being combined.

Day told JRN the study would cost no more than $5,000, with the funding to come from the county judge’s professional services line item. He said the county attorney and other internal services would conduct it.

The study must be completed within 60 days. In addition to seeing if the move is financially feasible, Day said, it would also determine if the offices could be combined while retaining proper checks and balances.

Wes Eddington is the current county tax collector, while Terry McNatt is the county treasurer.

Justices of the Peace Richard Rogers and Linda Allison were absent.
