The total solar eclipse this afternoon promises a breathtaking display of celestial beauty.
The event will begin at approximately 12:37pm as the moon starts to encroach upon the sun. Eclipse glasses should be worn during this time. During the partial phase, the moon will be slowly moving across the sun, and viewers can see the waning sun through their eclipse glasses.
Totality, when the sun is completely obscured, will begin around 1:55pm, lasting for about 2 minutes and 12 seconds in Jonesboro. During totality, when the sun is completely covered, viewers can safely remove their glasses to witness the awe-inspiring corona. During this brief but captivating period, the sky will darken, stars may become visible, and the sun’s corona will shine brightly. Be sure to LISTEN to nature around you as well. As the sky gets dark, nature may respond with a symphony of sounds. Birds might chirp less frequently or even go silent as they perceive the approaching darkness as nightfall. Insects, such as crickets, may begin their evening chorus, mistaking the dimming light for dusk. Animals could exhibit signs of confusion or agitation, sensing the sudden change in light and temperature. Some observers have reported hearing rustling in vegetation as nocturnal creatures become active prematurely.
As totality ends and the sun reemerges, it’s crucial to don the glasses once more to prevent eye damage. Totality ends at approximately 1:57pm and viewers must put their eclipse glasses back on to continue enjoying the eclipse until the end of the “partial” period at 3:15pm. During this period, the moon will continue to move across the sun and viewers can watch the waxing sun reemerge from its slumber.
We are excited to enjoy this celestial spectacle together and urge you to celebrate responsibly as you marvel at the wonders of the universe.
