Jonesboro, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – The man accused of killing a Crittenden County man last weekend was given a $2.5 million bond on Wednesday.
While standing before District Judge David Boling, the man, 24-year-old Terry Wofford of Marked Tree, was charged with one count of homicide – murder – 1st degree. This is a Class Y felony and carries up to 10 to 40 years, or life, in state prison.
According to the probable cause affidavit, the Jonesboro Police Department received a phone call about an unresponsive person in the parking lot of 111 Daybreak Drive on Jan. 31 at 10:07 p.m. Officers found the victim with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his face. He was pronounced dead on scene and later identified as 24-year-old Derrick Johnson.
Detectives discovered Johnson had been riding around in a gray car with Wofford and 26-year-old Christopher Smith. Around 8 p.m., they left a residence on Henry Street and said they were heading to Trumann, according to the affidavit.
Video footage from a nearby gas station showed Johnson’s car pulling up in the parking lot of 111 Daybreak Drive at 9:44 p.m., with Wofford sitting in the passenger side. At 9:45 p.m., Wofford then ran into his mother’s apartment.
According to the affidavit, there was a large amount of blood on the front driver’s side of the vehicle, where Johnson would have been sitting. Detectives also found two shell casings in the front passenger seat.
“It appears the shooting took place inside the vehicle with the occupants being Terry Wofford and Christopher Daveon Smith,” the affidavit said.
A few days prior, Wofford got an ID made and listed his mother’s address on his driver’s license, not his own. This violates his parole, so he was picked up for an absconding warrant through probation and parole.
Detectives went to interview Wofford about the shooting, where he “acted as if he doesn’t know anything about the shooting and doesn’t know what happened,” the affidavit said. Additionally, he did not wish to be questioned without a lawyer present.
“When informed that he is being charged with Homicide for Derrick Johnson, Wofford did not appear to be shocked or upset that he was being arrested for murder,” the affidavit said.
Meanwhile, a bench warrant was issued for Smith on Feb. 3, and he turned himself in at the Paducah Police Department, which is in Kentucky. He’s been charged with one count of fugitive from another state, according to online jail records. He’s being held in the McCracken County Jail.
On Feb. 4, officers conducted another interview with Smith, who said he and Wofford were the only people in the car with Johnson and that immediately after they parked the vehicle on Daybreak Drive, Wofford shot Johnson twice.
Wofford was given a $2.5 million cash or surety bond. If he makes bond, is to wear a GPS ankle monitor. However, Boling noted that due to a parole hold, he might not be able to get out of jail even if he does post bond.
Wofford’s next court date is set for March 20 at 8:30 a.m. He’s being held in the Craighead County Detention Center.
