Jonesboro, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – Nov. 13, 2024 – The Jonesboro Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 26 will be holding its first Turkey Trot 5K on Thanksgiving Day.
Money collected from the race will be used to replace the organization’s two vans used to provide no-cost transportation to and from Veteran’s Affairs clinics in Memphis and Little Rock.
The race will be Nov. 28, at the Lt. Col. Frederick C. Turner Jr. Military Science Building on the Arkansas State University campus. Registration begins at 6 a.m. and the race kicks off at 7 a.m. The event is open to anyone.
“The DAV raises funds year-round over several years to afford new vans as the current ones wear out from high mileage. The current vans are not necessarily broken down but may be older and need upgrading as they accumulate mileage,” said race coordinator Johnathon Mullins, an environmental sciences doctoral student who leads the on-campus Student Veterans Association.
The last day to register online for the DAV Turkey Trot 5K is Nov. 26, costing $25; however, registration will still be available on the day of the event. Registration includes a race day shirt, a bib number and a finisher medal.
“The DAV Turkey Trot 5K is perfect for everyone,” Mullins said. “Race enthusiasts will love the challenge of this timed event, while families can enjoy a fun and active way to start Thanksgiving morning. Get your heart pumping and make lasting memories before gathering for dinner and indulging in your holiday feast. Join us for a morning of fitness, community, and giving back to those who served.”
DAV was founded in 1920 by World War I veterans to support disabled U.S. military veterans and their families. In 1932, Congress granted the organization a federal charter. Today, the DAV has grown to include over one million members, continuing its mission of providing assistance and advocacy for disabled veterans.
