Jonesboro, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – Nov. 4, 2024 – The Craighead County Election Commission held a meeting Monday afternoon to approve polling centers for a possible city runoff for the general election.
If there were to be a runoff, it would be Dec. 3.
The seven approved locations include:
- Allen Park Community Center, 3609 Race St. in Jonesboro
- Arkansas State University – First National Bank Arena (lower red entrance), 217 Olympic Dr. in Jonesboro
- Earl Bell Community Center, 1212 S. Church St. in Jonesboro
- Forest Home Church, 2403 Ritter Dr., in Jonesboro
- Parker Park Community Center, 1522 N. Church St. in Jonesboro
- Valley View Church of Christ, 4500 Southwest Dr. in Jonesboro
- Walnut Street Baptist Church, 1910 Scenic Dr. in Jonesboro
According to Craighead County Election Commission Chair Jeannette Robertson, the presumption was that if there was a runoff, it would be in the Jonesboro mayoral race.
The four Jonesboro mayoral candidates are incumbent Mayor Harold Copenhaver, City Councilman L.J. Bryant, Jeremy Terrell and Thomas Elwood.
Craighead County Election Coordinator Jennifer Clack added that if there was another runoff that went into the county, such as State Rep. District 32, then they may need to add additional county polling places. Currently, the election commission is not anticipating a runoff on the county level.
Candidates in the State Rep. District 32 race include Republican State Rep. Jack Ladyman, Democrat David McAvoy, and Libertarian Eric I.B. McGee.
According to Arkansas law, there are two situations in which a runoff will not occur. The first is if any candidate receives 50% plus one vote. The other is if a candidate receives 40% of the vote and 20% more than the next candidate. Clack noted it would be unlikely to have a runoff in any of the other local races, however if there was a tie, there would be a coin flip.
