Jonesboro, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – Oct. 16, 2024 – All public transit fares will be free on Election Day, Nov. 5, due to a proclamation issued by Mayor Harold Copenhaver in Tuesday’s City Council meeting.
The proclamation honors Amberly Knowlton, who worked to make public transportation free for all on Election Day. Her friends and family were in attendance.
Knowlton died from breast cancer in August.
“Miss Knowlton was a civically engaged resident,” Copenhaver said. “She was passionate for voting rights, volunteering at polling stations and serving as an election coordinator for Craighead County.”
Knowlton volunteered with the Arkansas Martin Luther King Commission, served as Northeast Regional Vice President for the Arkansas Parent/Teacher Association and a recognized leader by the Jonesboro Black Professional Network.
“Her life’s work exemplified her ‘others-first’ spirit,” Copenhaver added. “With these accomplishments, she had a big heart.”
